前言

 

因為臺灣的英語教育偏向美式拼字  (color v.s. colour/ -er v.s. -re  結尾)、發音及語調。原因除了強大的好萊塢文化影響外,美國為強權國家,各國都希望能追崇 它的教育系統當然語言也不例外,以其第二外語,希望能就此拉近距離也是不爭 的事實。然而,現在世界像個村,英美語的使用遍及全世界,因為歐盟的成立、英鎊的走低,也讓到歐洲遊留學的人口增加,除了較為人所知且不影響理解力的發音差異。

本文要分享的是,以曾經發生在自己身上的經驗和網路上常聽到的 case來介紹極有可能因英/美語單字使用上造成誤會的 10 個單字。(以上單字,挑選為 以個人生活經驗上有碰到的為主 )

 

 

 

 


 

 

1. Jumper

UK: a sweater, something to keep you warm.

US: someone who is ready to jump off, or else, refers to the Hollywood Movie, Jumper (移動世界).

 

 

2. Pants/Panties

UK: bottom underwear, pants for men; panties, a cute way to say it for females.

US: a pair of trousers, a long-length bottom outwears.

 

 

 3.  Rubber (oh!  可憐的正經英國佬  )

UK: simply an eraser.

US: a common saying of condoms.

 

 

4.  Fag (Could I bum a fag off you? OOPS!)

        UK: simply a cigarette.

        US: a slang word for a homosexual or also used in wrong terms when person is disliked

 

 

 5. Trolley

UK: a shopping cart.

US: a cable car.

 

 

6. Chips

US: Potato chips, something called crisps in the UK.

 

 

7. First floor

US: the first floor = ground floor in the UK

 

 

8. Coach

US: a trainer/adviser of a game team.

 

9. Shag

UK: to have sexual intercourse

US: a carpet or some refer to the cigarette tobacco.

 

 

10.    Lift
